Not all AI recruiting tools rank candidates the same way. The underlying approach shapes what shows up at the top of your results list, how much time you spend reviewing candidates who don't fit, and ultimately how good your hires are.
This matters more than most evaluations of recruiting software focus on. The search interface looks similar across tools. The ranking logic underneath is very different.

A search for 'senior backend engineer with fintech experience' on a large candidate database can return thousands of profiles. Most of them are not right for the role. The question is how the tool decides what to show you first.
Three broad approaches exist, and each has different implications for how you work.
Nyckelordsmatchning
The most common and oldest approach. The tool finds candidates whose profiles contain the words you searched for. 'Fintech experience' narrows it to people who have that word somewhere in their text.
The limitation is that keyword matching is literal. A candidate who has spent three years building payment infrastructure at a banking startup may not have written the word 'fintech' anywhere. They don't show up. Meanwhile, someone who listed 'fintech exposure' in a side project bullet point shows up immediately.
Keyword matching is fast and predictable, but it rewards profile optimization over actual fit. The best candidates for a role are often not the ones who write the best profiles.
Filterbaserad rangordning
Ett steg upp från rena nyckelord. Rekryteraren sätter specifika filter: plats, antal år av erfarenhet, företagsstorlek, använda tekniker. Verktyget returnerar kandidater som uppfyller dessa filter, sorterade efter relevans och aktualitet.
Detta är mer precist men har fortfarande betydande luckor. Filter kräver att du vet exakt vad du söker innan du börjar söka. De missgynnar kandidater som beskriver sin erfarenhet med andra ord än vad filtret förväntar sig. Och de kan inte väga faktorer mot varandra: en kandidat som ligger lite fel på plats men är helt rätt på erfarenhet.
De flesta ATS-system och många sourcingplattformar använder filterbaserad rankning som sin primära metod.
AI-driven semantisk rankning
A fundamentally different approach. Instead of matching keywords or filters, the tool tries to understand what the role actually requires and what each candidate's profile actually means.
Modern language models can interpret meaning, not just match text. A candidate who describes 'building high-throughput transaction processing systems for a European bank' is understood to have fintech backend experience even if neither of those words appears literally in your search.
Semantic ranking also handles partial matches. Instead of returning only candidates who match every criterion, it returns candidates sorted by overall fit, showing the closest matches first and making clear where candidates are strong and where they fall short.
The practical difference is in what shows up first. A well-built semantic ranking system surfaces candidates that filter-based tools miss and buries candidates who look good on paper but are a poor fit.

When a vendor tells you their tool uses AI to rank candidates, the follow-up questions matter.
What data is the ranking based on? Profile text only? Or also activity signals, past outreach results, and engagement history?
How does it handle partial matches? Does it show candidates who meet 9 of 10 criteria with the gap clearly flagged? Or does it simply exclude them?
Can you see why a candidate was ranked where they were? If you can't understand why someone appeared at position 3 versus 30, you can't calibrate your searches or trust the results.
Does the ranking improve over time? Some tools learn from your behavior. If you consistently skip candidates with a certain background, does the ranking adapt?
How does it handle your existing ATS data? If the tool can't rank candidates from your own database alongside external sources, you're only seeing part of the picture.

The time you spend reviewing candidates who don't fit is time you're not spending on candidates who do. If your ranking is good and the right candidates are consistently in the top 10 results, your sourcing work is fast. If ranking is poor and you have to scroll through 40 profiles before finding someone worth contacting, your sourcing work is slow regardless of how good the underlying database is.
